Technical SEO Audit Service

First and foremost, this is not a guide on how to do a technical SEO audit. Our blog has plenty of resources that can help you learn how to do the things discussed here if that’s your goal. This page will discuss Netvantage’s technical SEO audit service. For those who don’t have the time or inclination to take on doing a technical site audit on their own, we are happy to help you out.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO, at least around these parts, pertains to all the functional aspects of your website that Google takes into account when deciding what to index and how to rank your site. Oftentimes, people only think of keywords, copywriting, and links when they think of SEO. However, the technical aspects of your site - how it works, and how it’s built, can hinder or help your rankings as much or more than those items if done very poorly or very well. If you're concerned about your content, keywords, and titles, check out our standard SEO audit services.

What makes someone a technical SEO expert?

We’re not big fans of the word “expert”. The truth is, Google’s algorithm is incredibly complex and you’re not likely to find anyone at any price who truly knows the true inner workings of Google’s ever-changing algorithm. What we bring to the table when it comes to technical SEO expertise are experience and focus.

Our team only works on search engine optimization, and that’s all we’ve ever done. We’re not an ad agency that contracts our SEO work to someone overseas or a development shop that dabbles in SEO. We are an SEO company that lives, eats, and breathes SEO and has done so since 2008.

What does Netvantage’s technical SEO audit include?

We offer a thorough review of your website in our technical SEO audit. We review critical items that pertain to important ranking factors and your site’s ability to be indexed by search engines. We use a number of tools in our process including Google Analytics, Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog SEO Spider, and more. The audit includes items such as:

  • Site accessibility for search engine bots
  • Mobile-friendliness
  • Site speed
  • Image optimization
  • Current site indexation status
  • Duplicate pages and canonical issues
  • XML sitemap structure and submission to major search engines
  • Broken links and redirects
  • Page depth and review for orphan pages
  • Structured data review
  • Core Web Vitals

What are Core Web Vitals?

If you’ve heard the term “Core Web Vitals” tossed around and weren’t sure what it was, we can help. In 2021 Google made public that this new set of metrics would be integrated into their larger algorithm. Here are some short explanations of the most critical elements.

  • Largest Contentful Paint - how long the largest visible element on a page takes to load.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift - how much elements on a page shift as it loads.
  • First Input Delay - how long it takes a page to respond to a user’s input.

There are additional CWVs that are not as critical, but still worth reviewing like First Contentful Paint, Speed Index, Time to Interactive, Total Blocking Time, and a total Page Performance Score. We will review Google’s aggregate feedback on your website and can also use an API to review your site page by page to see how all of your pages are performing on these new metrics.

What results should I expect from a technical site audit?

The results of a technical SEO audit can vary greatly depending on the health of your current site and your existing SEO. If we find that your site is in pretty good shape from a technical standpoint, you likely won’t see much if any improvement after we conduct an audit and fix any issues we find.

On the other hand, we’ve dealt with sites that have massive, critical errors that have caused search engines to completely ignore the website. Obviously, fixing those issues can take a site from literally being invisible to showing up in search results immediately. That’s clearly a big deal in those cases!

Realistically, however, most technical audits will have a modestly positive impact on your search results if your site has been built correctly, but we can often discover issues that are making search bots’ job of indexing your site more difficult. We often can find and fix items that are making it harder for users to use your site. The big thing that a technical SEO audit provides, more than anything, is peace of mind that your site doesn’t have a technical issue that’s hurting your business.
